Acknowledging the Bad

We all have the propensity for good and bad qualities. That’s a thought I keep returning to.

I think there’s a lot of value in recognizing that propensity. With it comes an acknowledgment of the degree to which we hold qualities that are harmful—greed, selfishness, pride—qualities that cause us to undermine our values and act in ways we regret.

It’s not easy to accept or even acknowledge these shadows of ourselves, but it is necessary. Even if we think we hold these qualities in lesser quantities than others, if we don’t recognize their presence in ourselves, we won’t be wary or aware enough to avoid such qualities taking hold of us. I find the good among us are not devoid of harmful qualities but rather have the awareness and humility to be careful that their actions stem from just understandings and motivations.

We all make missteps, but I think a humble and compassionate recognition of where we fall short can really empower us towards better action.
