The Hard Part of Working with Resorts as a Travel Creator

Building trust is the hard part. It's fairly common these days for resorts to be approached by photographers and travel creators, promising them media that'll transform their online presence. Unfortunately, it's also common for these creators to not follow through. I've heard stories of influencers asking for a few nights stay or taking a deposit, only to be never heard of again.

Obviously, this level of mistrust creates a major barrier. So, the way I've handled it is by doing my best to play better the role of a professional and less that of an influencer.

I'm a skilled videographer and editor, and my partner is a skilled photographer and model. But being skilled isn't necessarily enough. You have to communicate your skill and your reliability. So, I made a website, logo, business cards, and detailed PDF media packages. And like professionals we ask for money instead of "free" accommodation. And strangely enough, I think the businesses really appreciate that, even if it technically costs them more. These choices feel more symbolic than practical, but they’ve helped us better communicate our value and build trust. I'm still a beginner at sales and marketing, but I'm starting to appreciate the human sides of the craft. Friendliness and professionalism are very simple and yet very impactful.

Wishing you well,
