Are you holding a light or only asking people to follow?
It’s the age of followers. Social media, newsletters, content. Seems everyone now has a media strategy to grow a business, a presence, a following.
Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam - October 2024
With business, it’s a little different. There’s a clear directive: more views, more clicks, more purchases. But what about the rest of us? Is that also our north star: profit? If not, what is? Where are we headed? What are they following? Who are we bringing us, and where to?
These are some of the questions we all need to ask more often of ourselves. I’ve seen so many, including myself, get involved in this game with thoughtful intentions of community and social impact, only to lose direction in the climb. Is the purpose only to summit the mountain for profit and fame?
Art, fame, and losing direction seem like an old, tragic story retold many times. It’s a pitfall we can all succumb to, and perhaps in acknowledging that we may stand a better chance of avoiding it.
May our compasses be better calibrated before asking others to follow.
Take care,
Naser
